Why do I love shooting weddings you ask? Well………
1. Because I smile while I’m working hard, without being aware of it. At the end of a wedding, my face hurts as much as my feet. I’ve tried a few jobs in the past, but this one feels natural.
2. Because it gives me such a great view of humanity, I meet the happiest, nicest people!
3. Because I can take moments which were once evaporating and make them feel solidly tangible.
4. Because I get to be an explorer, treasure hunter, light catcher and memory maker.
5. Because I love a challenge….getting that shy boy to give me just the right look..working with the not so glamorous girl to get her to pose sexily….getting the groom to play along…making the evil bridesmaid(s) smile….I love a good challenge.
Photographing in sensitive and personal situations, I’ve learned the necessity of being discrete and unobtrusive. I believe that most outstanding candid and documentary photographs could not be made otherwise. I like to capture the day as it unfolds all the while photographing the joy, excitement, anticipation….and most of all-LOVE. I’ve said this before, my background as a photo-journalist has trained me to tell a story …… with photographs that are real! Please Note:
Since every Photographer has their own “style” I do not believe I am the photographer for everyone and I’m open only to clients who are looking to hire me, as an artist; not merely to hire me for my camera. The camera is a fantastic tool, but I believe my most powerful tool in my photography … is my heart.
This is why you’re encouraged to browse through my images to get a feel for my work. Does my style compliment the vision you have for your wedding day? If not, there are referrals to other photographers in the area that I would be happy to assist you with. I think it’s important to choose a photographer you “click” with because let’s face it, couples will spend more time with their wedding photographer than any other hired vendor for the day.
I currently am booking a limited amount of weddings per year. I’m half booked for 2011 and I’m already booking dates for as late as 2012. As far as holding dates – Sorry but because of the nature of the wedding business, I cannot hold dates without a signed contract and retainer.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can I make my own prints?
A: Yes, you can. The images have up to 12 million pixels, which is big enough to print any size of prints that are available.
Q: Is there a difference if I order custom prints from my event website or order directly from Jen McKen Photography?
A: Yes there is.
If you order prints directly from Jen McKen Photography, retouching will be performed as needed to make them look perfect. This retouching includes fixing skin imperfections, skin glare and light reflections in glasses, and removal of distracting items from the background. You could also request to change any image by into a signature image by adding or changing an enhancement effect. I can print on regular professional photo paper, metallic photo paper, or on canvas.
Q: Do you shoot in black and white?
A: I shoot digitally, which means everything is shot in color. However, any of the photographs are available in black and white at no extra charge, as long as they are a custom print or part of your album selection. Part of your proof set will be our signature images, and a good portion of them are in black and white.
Q: What exactly is a signature image?
A: About 10% of your proof images will be converted to signature images. These are some of our favorite images of your wedding that I artistically enhance with effects to make them look bolder. Many of those images are black and white or sepia, and others might be very artistically enhanced and almost not recognizable from the original image. The signature images are part of my artistic process and make my images unique. If you don’t like a specific artistic interpretation of an individual image I always have the untouched original images still available. On the other hand, I am also able to apply a similar signature image look you like to any other image of your proof set. This service does not cost anything extra as long as it is a custom print or part of your album selection. Many of the images on this website are signature images of proof sets of my clients.
Q: Do you do engagement sessions?
A: Yes, I do and I love them. I believe that an engagement portrait session is a fantastic way of getting to know each other and helps to establish a great relationship between the couple and photographer. It will help to make the wedding shoot smoother, more creative and the warm up period on your wedding day shorter. And best of all, you will have a fun experience and fantastic images to cherish.
Q: What equipment do you use?
A: Always the latest and greatest, no kidding! I always upgrade to the latest cameras and equipment. As a professional I believe that we both deserve nothing but the best tools available to create the best images possible. My equipment bag consists of at least three Canon professional cameras and six different professional lenses. If you are interested, we can talk about it in more detail when we meet in person.
Q: Are you willing to travel, and are there any travel expenses to consider?
A: I love to travel and find destination weddings fascinating. I don’t charge for traveling if your wedding takes place within Indiana County. Further travel requirements will be priced individually. Travel charges are very competitively priced.
Q: How long have you been photographing weddings?
A: I have been photographing weddings professionally for almost a 9years now and has photographed over one hundred weddings during this time.
Q: How many images do you take, and how many proofs will we see?
A: I take thousands of images, and the number varies dramatically depending on the coverage time, number of locations, bridal party size, family portraits, the time frame for the couple portrait session and many other factors that are unique to every wedding he photographs. Shooting so many different images gives us the opportunity to be selective and choose only the very best of the images. If you book an 8 hour coverage package, you can expect between 600-900 proof images-but again this may be more or less depending on the size of your wedding.
Q: How long will it take to see my images?
A: Usually your proofs will be available within three to five weeks after your wedding date. I say this to give me time incase things come up, however typically they are back much sooner that that!
Q: Do you do photography other than wedding photography?
A: Even though I do love weddings the most because of the love and emotional impact it has on people, I also shoot all kinds of other people photography such as all kinds of portrait sessions from family, kids and babies, class reunions, birthday celebrations and many different kinds of corporate events.
Q: Our wedding is not for a long time! When should we book you?
A: Today! I’m actually only half-joking: please understand that I can only shoot one wedding at a time. There were several situations in the past where I had to disappoint a potential client who needed more time to come to the decision to book me after our initial meeting, and it was too late because somebody else booked me in the meantime. I had clients who booked me on the spot based on the first telephone conversation, and others who booked me six months after our initial meeting, but please understand that I can’t hold any dates. Whoever books me first, gets the date.
Q: We love your work, you’re available on our wedding day, now what?
A: That’s always great news! The first step is that I will draft a contract, you sign it (electronically, I’m saving trees–LOL) and pay one-third of the agreed contract package payment as a retainer at that time. You’ll also be sent a questionairre to fill out that tells me more details about the big day…and some other fun stuff about the two of you!!
Q: WAIT! One more question: Is your real name Jen McKen?
A: NO…..my real name is Jennifer McKendrick, but say this three times fast: Jennifer McKendrick Photography! It’s way too long and unmemorable….Jen McKen is much shorter and hey….it rhymes!! Tee he he!
