Hayyyyyyy!!!!!  I am preparing to head out to Seattle, Washington for a few days which means I may not have access to my computer/email as much as I usually do from Thursday, February 9th-Monday, February 13th. I’ll be checking in periodically but I really just want to take these few days and really soak everything...

surrogacy: the journey | blairsville, pa photographer

I thought about it the whole way there…..trying to imagine what it might feel like. Thinking in my mind how my Mom had me when she was barely 16 and that (lets face it) I was an accident—or in other terms, an unplanned pregnancy, a surprise of sorts. THEN on the other end of the pregnancy spectrum,...

Caroline - Jen, I think this is my favorite post of yours (although, they’re all wonderful). What an incredibly beautiful, extraordinary thing for everyone involved. Thank you and them for sharing, I look forward to seeing more.

Shannon Wilkinson - Jen,

I can’t tell you what emotions this story and images brought out in me. It took me twelve very long years of a journey through my own infertility nightmare before I was able to get pregnant and stay pregnant. We did not use a surrogate but we did use a donor to have our three miracle babies. I am thankful for those who selflessly give up time in their lives so that families such as the one in this story are able to have the one thing that they desire more than anything else…children. I will be watching for the ending/beginning to this amazing story.

SarahAnn Lewis - That is the coolest – and most beautiful – thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait for the rest of the story. :-)

Courtney - I have always, always wanted to be a surrogate. This is the coolest set of photos. Thank you and thanks to this family for sharing!

Melissa Zihlman - These are awesome! I’m totally in tears! What an amazing story…and equally amazing people. I cannot wait to watch this journey through your viewfinder in the coming months. Prayers for them all!

I’m not sure where….. | southwestern, pa photographer

….I read it, but for some reason the quote stuck in my mind and I remind myself of it everyday-especially on the days I am hard on myself but it came to mind particularly today when I received an email from a fellow photographer. She mentioned that there was a photographer in her town that...

Lish - I love this post! I’ve been watching Creative Live this weekend which is what brought me to your blog(you were great btw!). I’m new to the field (just started my business last summer), and my only “photographer” friend lives several hours away. As I’m sure you know, starting in this business is tough, and I often feel that other photographers are judgemental and non-supportive. Despite that, I love photography, and I’m going to just keep plugging away and trying to improve my craft and my business. So, thank you for this encouraging post!

he gets it….. | southwestern, pa photographer

I blabber, I like to blab about non-sense, and cake, do you like wedding cake, I love chocolate, fluffy puppies, oh look something shiny…..it’s how my brain works…so I hope this makes at least an ounce of sense! For all of you “first generation” entrepreneurs, I think you might understand a little bit about what...

Nicole Pope - #1 – I love Greg.
#2 – I sometimes struggle with the same thing. Even though I don’t own my own business, I do love my job. I think sometimes that people who don’t love their job as much as we do, don’t get it. They don’t get why we work 60-80 hours per week. They don’t get why we can’t just drop what we are doing and go to lunch or dinner. They just don’t get that our jobs mean a lot to us and that we want nothing more than to be successful at something we do. I am a much happier person now than I was when I was working in my previous job. It’s good for me, even if it isn’t convenient for them. While some family and friends don’t always get it, it is really nice to know that I have some friends (like you!) who do get it. We can skype again and just minimize the screen and keep working. That way, you won’t really be talking to yourself. I’ll be there listening… kind of :)

Lori Lockhart - Thank you Jen for sharing this with me! I too am on my own so much of the time. I “get” it completely. Your stories are always so uplifting. Thanks again!

Lori

Lori Desmarais - Forgot to say….
The “look” he shot me when I said that was PRICELESS!!

Lori Desmarais - The begining of your post reminded me of a funny story (about me) “blabering about non-sense” and hoping someone gets it :-)
I too can speak in “complete” sentanses…complete meaning…one thought goes right into the next until I run out of air.
This is a true example of one that comes to mind.
I’m riding with my ex-boyfriend thru a wealthy neighborhood with these big beautiful old victorian houses.
Upon seeing one that caught my eye…here is what I said…
“OH my gosh…look at that house…it’s so beautiful…I always wanted a farmers poarch…what a cute dog sitting there…by the way…how old is your mother??” :-)
Hope that gave you a chuckle.
As far as your husband…”Two thumbs up Greg”!! That is beyond awesome.

Erica - This just made me completely teary eyed! Everyone should have someone in their life that “gets it”! I work from home as well, not for my own business, but I do all the behind the scenes things while my boss travels. It can definitely get lonely! Nothing makes my day more than when a friend surprises me for lunch. Just Know you’re appreciated and we all “get it”!!

Rayleigh Leavitt - Awww, your husband is so sweet! I almost started crying when reading your post. haha!

I know exactly how you feel. I feel like I’m constantly bombarding my husband with talk about my biz because he’s the only one I have to talk to about it. My family totally doesn’t get it. Especially if I talk to them about pricing. Because they can’t see why a photographer would need to charge more than $150 to do a shoot. Haha! They don’t totally don’t get it, even when I try to explain it.

But I recently joined the local Chamber of Commerce. Now I have tons of friends who are all small business owners and they totally know what it’s like and they understand all of it!!! It’s so great to have that support system.
