Come’on Mom!!! She says as she pulls me closer to the “tower”. That “tower” she was referring to was the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. To climb to the top, it’s 214 steps. It was the last major brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks. After extensive restaoration, it was opened to the public in 1990. The visitor fee that you pay to climb to the top, is used for restorations and there’s over 1 million bricks so THAT’s a lot of upkeep. At a height of 158 feet, the night beacon still flashes at 20-second intervals to warn ships hugging the chain of barrier islands along the coast.
It was a pretty cool afternoon and I think the kids loved it. I’ll tell ya, I didn’t think I had it in me to get to the top….but it wasn’t as hard as you might think. Besides we got really cool stickers when we came back to the bottom! Mallory lead the way up all the steps till we got to the top, she stepped out onto the observation deck, took one look and immediately ran back for the door. Greg had to carry her the rest of the way back down!!
You may not be able to tell from these pictures but it was already 90 plus degrees that day, the sun was blaring down because it was pretty close to lunch time…….and we climbed to the top of a non-air conditioned building. Boy oh boy did it feel great to get to the top and feel the breeze! 🙂

……..and the view from the top!

……more than half way there….

….and this was about the time my Gluteus Maximus were burning!! hahaha
