He began rummaging through the bag immediately picking up the first thing he came to and ripping open the wrapper… and my eyes began to water. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking….”and we were going throw it away!”.

You see, this year at WPPI we ourselves were trying to be more “cost effective” so we got a room with two kitchens…yes TWO kitchens which allowed us to make our own breakfast as well as store food for our lunch. We browned bagged it during the conference because let’s face it, $25 for a sandwich is a bit ridiculous! On the second day, we rented a car for a shoot we had planned but then we also swung by the grocery store so that we could stock our 2 fridges. Two trips to our room with grocery bags we finally had what we’d need for the week. Between 7 people we had lots of food left over at the end of our stay. We couldn’t take it home with us  so we had two choices…..throw it away OR give it to someone who could find it useful!

The girls separated all of the food into three bags in the lobby of the hotel-sure we got some weird looks but as we carried the heavy yellow bags what probably felt like MILES we approached the first homeless man. We expected them to take it but we didn’t expect them to immediately open and start eating, if I’m being honest, it broke my heart. In a world where we are taught to be skeptical of anyone begging for money, to tell them to “just go get a job”, to assume that they are faking, that they drive better cars than us, etc. etc……it was so heartwarming to watch a group of MY FRIENDS be so SELFLESS! One of the BEST highlights of our trip….at least for me!
