A Decade Behind the Lens: Watching Families Grow in Real Life
It’s crazy to think about how long I’ve been photographing families—some for over a decade. I’m talking about families whose babies I once chased around with a camera, capturing their giggles and toddling steps. Now, those “babies” are teenagers. Each year, I see changes—hair gets longer, personalities deepen, and the quiet kids who used to hide behind their parents now confidently step forward, and their parents’ expressions tell their own story. It’s honestly one of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer, and it fills me with gratitude every time I look back.
I still remember the first session in their backyard in 2013, with their two boys barely toddlers. The shoots back then were a whirlwind of giggles, chubby cheeks, and the joy that fills a family’s home when their children are little. Through the years, we’ve kept up this tradition—often returning to that same yard, but sometimes venturing to meaningful spots for holiday photos or other special sessions. These little “checkpoints” have let us capture moments that feel authentically theirs.
Their poses have shifted from playful chaos to a new maturity, their personalities in full bloom. They’ve gone from playing pretend to holding conversations about real life, future plans, and passions. It’s a reminder of how time flies and how vital it is to capture it all.
In this industry, I’m now at a point where I’m seeing full circles happen. Some of my couples who hired me for weddings have started families of their own. Those newborns? They’re inching toward their senior years, where I get to photograph them again in a completely new light. The kids who once giggled through family sessions are now planning weddings of their own. I feel honored beyond words to be trusted with these parts of people’s lives.
Each photo is a slice of your family’s story. As you change, so do the photos: from finger-painted smiles to prom dresses, from kindergarten crowns to graduation caps. Having a record of every stage isn’t just a collection of pictures. It’s a time capsule, a reminder of who you were and the bond that held you all together.
With my own kids, I’ve seen how quickly childhood becomes young adulthood, and each year becomes part of the past before you know it. That’s why I believe so deeply in capturing all of it—the messy, the joyful, the ordinary, and the extraordinary. I hope that each family I work with treasures these images as much as I do, because they’re not just photos; they’re your family’s beautiful, ever-changing story. Thank you for trusting me with the honor of documenting it, year after year.
