Some weddings are planned years in advance, with every detail meticulously crafted. Others come together in six days—and still manage to take your breath away. This past Saturday, I had the honor of photographing the wedding of Blake and Zoe, a couple whose love story unfolded in the most unexpected (and beautifully chaotic) way.

I’ve been photographing him since he was around 10 years old, and as he gold older, he’s always joked that I would shoot his wedding some day. Well, he wasn’t kidding. Originally, Blake and Zoe planned to tie the knot in 2025, but life (and love) had other plans.

What started as an intimate elopement for just the two of them snowballed into a family affair, with parents, siblings, and grandparents all joining the celebration. And the best part? Blake’s mom made sure I was there to capture it all.

The Surprise Photographer

Blake’s mom emailed me on a Monday with a simple yet thrilling question: “Are you free this Saturday?” (Yes, six days later Saturday.) Her idea was to have me show up as a total surprise for the couple, but after some thought, we decided to let them in on the plan. I mean, a heads-up is probably appreciated when you’re standing in the rain in a wedding dress, right?

I had a quick phone call with Blake the day before the big day, where we hashed out their vision: rustic daytime shots before the ceremony and moody, urban night shots in downtown Indiana afterward. It was ambitious, spontaneous, and exactly my kind of vibe.

Rain, Cold, and Pure Magic

Let me just say—Zoe is an absolute rockstar. It was 37 degrees, cold, wet, and raining the entire time, but you’d never know it from the way she carried herself. While everyone else bundled up in coats and long sleeves, Zoe braved the weather in her stunning dress and delicate shoes, never once complaining. Her grace and grit completely stole the show.

Blake, of course, knew exactly what to expect from me (years of practice!), but Zoe was a bit of a wild card—and she crushed it. From rustic backdrops to moody night shots with off-camera flash, we captured images that feel perfectly “them.”

A Celebration of Love

Though it wasn’t the massive 2025 celebration they initially envisioned, this wedding was everything it needed to be: heartfelt, beautiful, and full of love. It’s always such an honor to witness and document the milestones in my clients’ lives, and this one felt especially meaningful.

Blake and Zoe, you two are magic. Thank you for letting me be part of your whirlwind day. I hope you love your photos as much as I do—rain-soaked dress and all.
