One of the most frequently asked questions that I get is “How do we pick a location to have my photos taken?” This is a loaded question, the quick answer is: it depends! On What? your personality, the look and feel you’re going for, the time of the day, what outfits you are wearing, among a million other things but the most important thing of all is the lighting. One thing I’m going to try to make a conscience decision on from now on is to take a “pull back” shot of where I’m shooting to show you that some of the places we shoot at aren’t all that glamorous and may have been overlooked by anyone else.
I think people have this perception that you must have a pretty field of flowers to take awesome shots, and sometimes thats true, if that is the look you’re going for….but for the most part, what is stopping you from picking that run down looking building or that alley way near your house or perhaps that beat up porch swing because you think it will be “ugly”. WRONG. I’ve shot photos in a junk yard before and they’ve looked “slammin” (as the client would say). I look for three main things when shooting, colors, textures and lighting. It doesn’t matter how ugly something is if it has a cool color, texture and awesome light……but good light ALWAYS overpowers colors and texture if I have to chose!
So why am I bringing this up? I challenge you to think of locations for your shoot that you may have not thought about or you may have just drove by thinking “ahh that’s ugly”. Does that spot fit your personality, fit your theme or more importantly does it mean something to you! Let’s chat about what you have in mind and together we can pick the perfect location for YOU! The possibilities are endless! If you put a little thought into your session, you will LOVE your photos that much more-afterall, don’t you want them to reflect your personality!?!
Below you will see on the left side the pull back shot of the location ( or the best I could find ) and then on the right will be what I shot! So as you can see…….the locations are limitless if you put a little thought into it! 🙂
