  • Photography for FUN people!

Howdy fun people of the world! I'm Jennifer McKendrick-but my friends call me "jen mcken"! I shoot on location RELAXED life style Portraits and Weddings for the coolest people EVERRRR. I'm based out of Indiana County, Pennsylvania and I serve many of the other counties around the Pittsburgh area including all of West/Southwest Pennsylvania. Do I travel outside of those areas? Absolutely!!

This blog is meant to be informal while following both my personal and professional life, and features images from the weddings and portraits I shoot, the places I travel and the friends and family members that mean so very much to me.

I Hope you enjoy stopping by every now and then to check out what I’ve been up to and to see some of the latest examples of my work. Please, make yourself at home here. Hang around as long as you like, invite some friends over and while you’re at it, leave a comment or two so I know you were here!

My itty bitty disclaimer: I'm not a writer, I don't claim to be, I don't want to be. I have horrible spelling, awful grammar and down right nasty punctuation...but I do promise, I AM college ed-umacated! :) Tee he he he. But on a serious not, this place is where none of that matters. This is my little piece of the inter-webber and I can say, spell and punctuate anyway I want :)

The First Look…..Love at First Sight?

I felt I should address this topic since I’ve been receiving SOOO many emails/phone calls regarding it…”The First Look”.

I believe in love at first sight, cheesy maybe, but I do believe it exists! After meeting with soo many wedding clients over the years, I can’t begin to count the amount of times couples have told me, “I saw her (or him) and I just knew”…..  THAT’s why I love my job. I’m not only hired to document all the events that go into a typical wedding timeline, but I also get to photograph emotions and that “I saw her and just knew” moment all over again as the Groom sees his Bride-to-be for the first time.  It’s magic….cue the cheesy music now!! LOL

I love the look on the Grooms face as he reaches up to loosen his tie because he’s so choked up with emotion, I love the tears in the Brides eyes and how she looks up to the ceiling to stop them from falling down her face. I love it all! As I’m approaching my first couple of weddings for 2010 I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about “the first look”. Traditionally, this moment happens when the doors of the back of the church open and there stands the Bride. She’s far away, there’s tons of people staring at her and it makes it difficult to have  an “OMG your so beautiful conversation” at the bottom of the isle.

As romantic as it sounds, to some people, it’s intimidating and what should be “private” moment turns into a public display. So here is what I’m offering to my current/future clients, this may not be for everyone (I understand) but for those of you who want to have a intimate and private “First look”, let me explain. There’s no right or wrong scenario here. And the I agree that there are pros and cons to either waiting until the walk down the aisle or to seeing one another beforehand. Like everything involving your wedding, this is a very personal decision, which means it weighs entirely on your individual preferences. Carefully considering each option is the best way to make the right decision. First of which is to understand WHY the Bride and Groom are kept from seeing each other—traditionally speaking:

I have a lot of Brides who cringe when I ask them if they’d like to see their Groom before the ceremony. “It’s tradition. I don’t want to jinx anything,” is a common answer. Do you know how this tradition came about? The superstition stems from the days when marriages were arranged and the groom might never have seen the bride. There was a chance that he might take one look at her and bolt – so it was often safer for them to meet for the first time at the altar!

With that said, weddings celebrate rich, time-honored tradition. Regardless of which culture, religious affiliation or country of origin the couple represents, traditional elements make their way into the wedding to one degree or another. With so many personal decisions involved in wedding planning, the results are never run of the mill, but oftentimes they’re idiosyncratic, intimate and, hopefully, incomparable. One such decision that you may agonize over is whether to see your partner before the ceremony, or to wait for your eyes to meet an the aisle. It can put you in a conundrum.

As a photographer, if you ask me what I’d prefer- I’d absolutely have to say: Do it, have that private first look. What is the one moment from your wedding day that you really want to carry in your heart and mind forever? For many, it is the moment they first lay eyes on the person they are about to marry. Why not make it personal, intimate and magical? We’d set up a special location and have the Groom waiting patiently. You walk up behind him and place your hand gently on his back so that he knows you are there, he turns around and sees how beautiful you are…and you get a genuine reaction! There’s tears, there’s hugs and there’s soooooo much love in the air. It’s beyond words. It’s love at first sight! I told you it exists!!!:)

If your interested, GREAT, give me a buzz and we’ll chat. If your not, well, that’s A-OK as well. As long as I get to eat a piece of cake, I’m happy either way!! Tee he he.

Drippity Drop

Drip, Drop, Drippity Drop Drop till ya can’t stop…sorry, I know I”m a dork. I was actually singing this while taking the photos (insert embarrassing face here!!)

I’d like to think that water drops are just like sunsets, snow flakes, or rainbows -no two are ever the same. Today, I set up shop in the kitchen and photographed water drops. Sounds boring right….it was actually REALLY COOL. The most important piece of equipment I used today?? A towel!!

It’s not secret we’ve gotten over 20 plus inches of snow up yonder here in Pennsyl-tuckey so besides going out to shovel the side walk or play Igloo party with Miss Mallory, I’ve been experimenting with some of my equipment. My other fellow photographers can atest to this: sometimes doing work for yourself is slim to none because your always on assignment or doing shoots, editing photographs for someone else. Well today, it was alllllllll me…muahh ha ha ha ha!! After I made stuffed peppers to bake all day in the crock pot (don’t be hat’in) I set up shop and photographed some good old fancy water drops. I’m kinda impressed with the way they came out. What do ya think? And Yes………I do know it doesn’t take very much to amuse me. Give me a tray of water and I’ll be amused for hours!! LOL

admin - I’m gonna have to agree with you 100% on the colors. I loved them because of their patterns. GOT MILK?! LOL

CourtneyKatherinePhotography - yes it is great when photographing something of pleasure is done, never happens here! :( very cool water drop sequence!!! love the colors!!!! not a huge fan of the creamy milky ones…..just because because they aren’t as vibrant as the others….i think :)

I’m addicted.

They say the first rule to combating any addiction is acknowledgment. There I said it, I’m Jen McKen and I’m addicted to Super Mario 3 Wii. I eat, sleep and breath trying to figure out how I’m going to get that damn Propeller Hat! I love the Propeller Hat ! I think my addiction has rubbed off onto my daughter–what kind of parent am I? As we’re playing she tries to ask me a question and there I am so focused on the darn game that she literally has to knock me over to get an answer. I need help…is there a support group, am I all alone? Do they sell pink controllers?I would totally bedazzle it! Oh Lawdy….tee he he

We actually still have the old school game and game counsel-you know the games that you had to blow into if they didn’t work..haha! But Wii is so much more fun because we can all play….and we laugh….ohhhh do we laugh, especially when all of us are playing and running in different directions! Needless to say we play on the Co-Operative version and our family motto is: If you’rr in trouble, bubble! All of you other gamers will know what that means! Tee he he

What can I say, I’m enjoying family time, laughing my butt off and watching Mallory tell Greg “In YOUR Face!” After she steels his mushroom or as she says “Fire Powerrrrr” and giggles insanely….well, I don’t care who you are…. that right there is priceless. Yee Haw!

I’m not really sure which is funnier….Mallory’s face because she just died OR Greg because he’s sitting on a pink bean bag!:)

Six

My lil’ brother Jacob turned six today-I feel old! We’ve always tried to get together on the ACTUAL day of that persons birthday so today we all gathered at my Mom’s for some cake/cake smashing, ice cream, present opening and a balloon fights. Yeah, never a dull moment!! Good times:)

He’s going to be so handsome when he grows up!

Gramma Boggio…

This woman has been instrumental to so many people, and although she’s not technically my Grandma, she goes out of her way to make everyone feel as if they are an extension of her family! I’ve known her more than 15 years  which is as long as Maria and I have been best friends. She’s spunky, she’s genuine but most of all she’s the cutest little 90 year old Italian woman! I love her mannerisms, I love her smile and I love to hear her tell stories of her younger years. I can see why her grandchildren adore her so!

This morning, my best friend Maria and I spend a few hours admiring her in the kitchen. She greeted us at the door with hugs and kisses and lead us into the kitchen where she had been making her famous spaghetti sauce since 5:30 am. As she got to work making the meatballs, I couldn’t help but to admire her process. A little of this, a little of that, a taste of this, a taste of that. No measuring cups or spoons just a pinch of one and a handful of another.

Although she wasn’t keen on having her photos taken, both Maria and I kept her busy by asking her lots of questions…before two long, she forgot I had the camera. I will mention that the majority of these were taken without having the camera up to my face…meaning I was shooting and praying they would come out. I wanted to capture “the simple” things that we often forget. Maria, and the rest of the Boggio family, I hope that I’ve preserved a bit of history for you that you can pass down to the next generation and the next: Grandma Boggio at her finest!:)

Maria - I love the picture of her on the telephone. I remember when I was little, and she would talk in Italian on the phone to her sister. I would sit under the dining room table and listen to her. Now that I live across the street, I sit on my front porch in the summer and I can hear her on the phone….I will always remember that.
