Some Love Stories Aren’t Loud. They’re Comfortable.

There are couples who immediately command attention. Then there are couples like Ainsley and Dylan. Their relationship doesn’t rely on extravagant moments to prove how much they love one another. Instead, it’s built from ordinary evenings, shared routines, inside jokes, and the quiet confidence that comes from simply enjoying each other’s company. As a photographer serving Blairsville, Pennsylvania, Indiana County, and Western Pennsylvania, these are the stories I naturally gravitate toward. Because those everyday moments? They’re often the ones that last the longest.

The Night They Knew

Ask Dylan when he realized Ainsley was different, and he won’t tell you about fireworks or some cinematic first kiss. He talks about pizza. More specifically… The college special from their local pizza shop.

One of their first nights together was spent ordering way too much food, watching movies, relaxing on the couch, and realizing neither one of them had to pretend to be anyone else. Sometimes that’s exactly how you know because it finally rests.

The Number She Almost Didn’t Give Him

Their story actually began at a bar. When Dylan asked for Ainsley’s number… She laughed.

His version? “Guess she thought she was too good for me.”

Her version? “I had a few drinks and thought he was charming, so I caved.”

Safe to say they’re both sticking to their stories. Thankfully she gave him her number anyway.

The Proposal She Knew Was Coming… Sort Of.

Dylan almost pulled off the perfect surprise. Almost. About an hour before proposing, Ainsley noticed something felt different. His biggest giveaway? He made dinner reservations. Apparently that’s not something he normally does.

After dinner, they took a short hike into a secluded wooded area beside a river. Waiting there was a blanket, flowers, a custom sign with their names and the date, and Dylan’s sister hiding behind a tree to photograph the entire proposal. Even though she suspected something was coming… It didn’t make the moment any less meaningful.

The Little Things That Matter Most

One of my favorite questions I ask couples is what an ordinary Saturday morning looks like. Not the Instagram version. The real version.

For Ainsley and Dylan, it’s wonderfully simple. Sleeping in. Making coffee. Cooking breakfast together.

Those are the moments that quietly build a marriage. Not vacations or holidays. Just ordinary mornings that eventually become years.

Opposites Really Do Balance Each Other

Every great couple seems to have that one personality difference that somehow works perfectly. Ainsley admits she can be a little more organized and likes having things under control.

Dylan? He’s much more relaxed. Sometimes…Maybe a little too relaxed.

It’s one of those beautiful reminders that relationships aren’t about finding someone exactly like you. They’re about finding someone who helps make you better.

Faith, Distance, and Growing Together

Their relationship wasn’t always easy. While attending Grove City together, they experienced seasons of physical distance and learned how to navigate the challenges every relationship eventually faces.

Instead of pulling them apart, those experiences strengthened them. They shared that having similar goals for the kind of people they want to become—and allowing their faith to shape those goals—has helped them continue growing together. That foundation is something you can genuinely feel when you’re around them.

Why They Chose Jen McKen Photography

One answer especially stuck with me. When I asked what drew them to my work, they didn’t mention poses. Or locations. Or editing.

They said they felt emotional looking through the photographs. They loved the moments that had been captured. That means more than I can put into words. Because that’s exactly what I’m hoping people see when they look at my work. Real moments that remind you how it all felt.

Looking Ahead

I already know their wedding day won’t simply be about beautiful portraits. It’ll be about the quiet glances. The laughter during church when someone inevitably gets the giggles. The tears from Ainsley’s mom. The ordinary little interactions that quietly tell the story of two people who genuinely enjoy doing life together.  And those are always my favorite stories to tell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was this engagement session photographed?

This engagement session took place in Western Pennsylvania, highlighting beautiful natural scenery that complements documentary-style engagement photography.

Do you help couples feel comfortable if they’ve never had professional photos taken?

Absolutely. Most of my couples tell me they feel awkward before we begin. My approach focuses on conversation, movement, and genuine interaction rather than stiff posing, allowing natural moments to unfold.

Can we include personal details or meaningful locations during our engagement session?

Yes! Whether it’s your favorite hiking trail, your family property, downtown streets, or somewhere that tells your story, I love incorporating locations that have real meaning.
