Why Your Football Senior Photos Should Feel Like Game Day

There are two kinds of football photos. The first are the ones everyone expects: Stand on the field, hold the helmet, and smile. Done.

The second? The kind that make people stop scrolling. That’s the goal every time I photograph a football senior.

For Brendan’s senior session in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, we wanted to create images that felt bigger than a portrait. We wanted them to feel like Friday night under the lights. And that’s exactly what we did.

One of my favorite ways to photograph football players is by combining two completely different environments. We began inside the studio where every light was carefully placed to sculpt the uniform, define every detail, and create bold portraits that look like they belong on the cover of a sports magazine. The blue lighting and haze gave the images a cinematic feel while allowing Brendan’s confidence to take center stage.

Then…We took everything outside.

Sometimes Mother Nature Joins the Team

One thing I never could have planned? The sky. As the evening went on, dark clouds rolled across the stadium, creating one of the most dramatic backdrops I’ve photographed all season…. we leaned into it. Those moody skies transformed great football portraits into unforgettable ones. One of my favorite images from the session is Brendan standing beneath the goalposts while the clouds seem to swirl overhead, a reminder that sometimes the best lighting setup is one you don’t control.
