Every year, I photograph football players who tell me the same thing. “I definitely want football pictures.” And they’re absolutely right. Football has been a huge part of their high school experience. It deserves to be documented. But here’s what I always remind them…
You are so much more than the sport you play.
Twenty years from now, you’ll remember the touchdowns. You’ll remember Friday night lights. But you’ll also remember the afternoons on your pap’s farm. The summers behind a boat. The dog waiting for you when you got home from practice. The hobbies that made you who you were before adulthood started asking you to specialize. That’s exactly why Brendan’s senior session worked so well.
Football Told One Story…
The studio football portraits were all about confidence. We created dramatic lighting that looked like something straight out of a sports magazine. Then we headed to the football field where Friday night memories came alive again. Those images celebrate years of practices, bruises, victories, teammates, and one unforgettable season that included All-Conference honors and Catch of the Year. But football only tells part of Brendan’s story.

Watching Brendan water ski was about documenting something that’s been part of his life for as long as he can remember. Those are the kinds of images that become priceless later. Anyone can recreate a football pose. No one else can recreate your childhood summers.
Then We Went Somewhere Even More Meaningful
The other part of Brendan’s session took place at his pap’s farm. The funny thing about farms is they rarely need much styling. Years of family memories already live there. For Brendan, it represents afternoons outdoors, family traditions, hard work, and a place he’ll probably think about years from now long after graduation. That’s the difference between choosing a pretty location and choosing a meaningful one.
What Makes Senior Photos Timeless?
I often tell parents that the goal isn’t to photograph everything your senior does.
The goal is to photograph what they’ll miss someday.
That might be:
- Friday night football.
- Grandpa’s farm.
- The family boat.
- The fishing spot they escape to.
- Their first truck.
- The dog they’ve grown up with.
- The guitar they’ve spent years teaching themselves to play.
Those aren’t props….but chapters.
His session was memorable because every location represented a different piece of who he is. The athlete. The outdoorsman. The grandson. The musician. The future electrician. Senior year isn’t about choosing one identity. It’s about celebrating all of them before life carries you into the next chapter.
One day, the uniform will be folded away. The boat rides will become stories. The afternoons on the farm will look a little different. That’s exactly why these moments deserve to be photographed now.
