What inspired me to do these sessions? Well, I’m so glad you asked because although it might not be what you expect, it’s a reality.

I, myself, turned 40 this past year. I’ve had some recent life changes and I’ve spent lots of time looking back thru my own family photos (because it’s what I do when I’m a little sad), I’m realizing that I’m not in as many photos as I would have loved to have had. I have so many sweet moments of the kids with their Dad-fun little memories of them doing fun things together or sweet little moments that I’d think to snap as they were happening but when it comes to me…well, I have lots of selfies with the kids where one of us is holding the camera out to get the shot but not nearly as many as I’d love to have. It makes me sad when I sit and think about it because I was like many of you-always busy documenting those moments for everyone else. Trust me when I say, my kids to this day are annoyed with how many photos I take….but I almost feel like I don’t exist in a way because while I was being annoying photographing all the milestones and big life moments for everyone else -I was almost invisible and I KNOW that many of you Mama’s reading this feel the same way.

Fast forward to a conversation I had just the other day with an elderly man while shopping at the grocery store. We were in those long holiday lines waiting for a register to open up when I saw him holding a Walmart photo envelope. It was the only thing he had and he had this somber energy about him-I could just feel it. I made small talk with him and told him to go ahead of me, when he shared with me that he was making a copy of a photo of his wife so that they could use it in her obituary. He pulls it out and shows it to me and it was a beautiful professional photo from when she graduated high school back in 1959. He goes on to say that they are using this photo because she didn’t have very many nice photos of herself, she was always the one taking the photos. He said that although she looked beautiful in that photo he was holding-it’s the year he fell in love with her after all, he wished she had some more photographs of herself so that people could remember how she recently was because she “got so much sweeter with age”…one where he could FEEL her laughter and that he’d give anything to see “those damn crows feet she always complained about more more time.”

When I tell you, I cried in the middle of “the Walmarts”. I believe we were supposed to meet that day. There’s something about losing someone or going thru big life changes that makes you reflect.  We spend money on things that will give us temporary enjoyment: coffee, getting our nails done, our hair colored, expensive shoes …the list goes on. But we find it hard to spend money on something that will leave a legacy or we make excuses because we put on a few pounds, have few more wrinkles or we don’t know what to wear!

The photos aren’t for YOU, they are for THEM. I don’t know about you but I don’t want my loved ones to have to use a high school photo of myself because it’s the ONLY thing they have- they don’t care that you put on a few extra pounds. Just like that man in the Walmart checkout line,  they would give anything to see “those damn crows feet she always complained about more more time.”

I’m honored to be able to photograph women….and I would LOVE for you to be one of them!
