She got out of her car wearing a snowman sweater with the biggest smile on her face. Her personality was magnetic and as she pulled her decorated cane out and pivoted towards me with her bright hair, I couldn’t help but smile. I just knew she was going to be a riot to work with. And I was right, she was so pleasant, patient and she had such kindness about her. She had traveled 50 minutes to get to her session and I was honored she was going to have me photograph her portraits for my Over 40 Project.
You see most of us women are ghosts. We’re there, but no one will see us. We simply don’t exists in photos. We’re always the one taking the photos for our own family photo archives or we’re too busy making excuses that our hair or makeup isn’t done, we don’t like our outfit, we need to lose 20lbs or <insert any other self depreciating comment>. I’m just as guilty.
I think that’s why I love these sessions. Women come into the studio and we create gorgeous images of them. It will be something for someone to hold onto one day, feel the paper in their hands and say THAT is my Mom. THAT is my Grandma, Sister, Aunt….Friend. Isn’t she amazing. We all have a story, we’ve all overcome some obstacles in our lives and we all deserve to exist in images. These sessions make my heart happy.
“I can’t wait to do this! I am a young thinking 63 year old. I have finally come to terms with my beautiful, but less than perfect body. I have moderate Rheumatoid Arthritis and use a cane. My medications have added on the pounds, but I know without these medications, my mobility would be much worse. I want to celebrate the fact that I don’t let my RA disease define me. I am proud of the woman I have become.”- Deb
