Back in 1996 I was starting my 9th grade year. If you would have told me back then that 23 years later, I’d eventually have a daughter starting her high school career at the very same school, I would have laughed SO HARD. I had dreams of moving away from small town USA and starting a new life in the big bad city -out of state. I wanted to get FAR away from here…….Ohhh now naive I was! If you would have told me that I’d stick around to watch my brothers and sisters grow up, to stay close to the family I couldn’t WAIT to get away from and that I’d build a business in a town with less than 4,000….I would have NEVER believed you…yet here I am watching my daughter go off to the same alma mater to create memories in the same home town! I remember my high school years VERY vividly….to be honest, they are some of my best memories. I can only hope that she has the same experience I did and that these turn out to be some of the best years of HER life.
Last night before we went to bed, Greg and I were talking about how we only have 3 more years of “first days of school” before she graduates. Ya’all-that went SO FAST! Before we know it, she’s not going to be getting on the bus! She’ll be driving herself to school. I know she can’t WAIT until that day…but I certainly can!
She’s a good kid! I’m not saying that because she’s my daughter, I’m saying that because she TRUELY is! I know we still have 3 more years to navigate and get thru but…I can honestly and whole heartedly say she’s a good kid. I’m not sure how I got so lucky considering I gave my parents a really hard time when I was her age. I’d like to think I’m doing something right…but I think a large part of it is her personality. She might leave her dishes in her room, she might get crumbs on the floor when she eats her Doritos and she forgets to turn the lights out every now and again…but she’s polite, pleasant, smart and she’s kind. I can’t ask for more! She doesn’t talk back and does what we ask-I’m not sure where she came from?! haha!
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know that I’ve been documenting the first day of school since she’s started Kindergarten! I thought by now she’d refuse to let me snap pictures…but it’s like she just knows it’s going to happen and she’s got such an easy-going personality that she just goes with it! Yep, I’ll be that mom doing it until she’s a senior and then we joke about how I’ll show up in her dorm room on the first day of college! haha!
If you want to take a trip down memory lane:
